Sleep Quality and Quality of Life in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic medical conditions that effect on physical and psychotic dimensions of life quality. Sleep disorder is one of common problems in the patients that mutually influenced on life quality and incidence of diabetes. The aim of the study was to investigate sleep quality and quality of life in adults with type 2 diabetes, and to examine the relationships between these two parameters with biochemical variable of HbA1c and anthropometric variable of BMI.

Methodology: This descriptive – correlation study was conducted on 110 eligible patients with type 2 diabetes seen at a diabetic's patient's community in Hamedan city. The subjects were selected through non-probability sampling by purposive method. Data collection instruments were Diabetes Quality of Life (SF-36) questionnaire modified, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire and HbA1c and BMI variables. Validity and reliability these questionnaires were confirmed in Iran. Data analysis was performed by SPSS version 12 and statistical methods of chi-square test, Pearson correlation index and linear regressions.

Results: The results showed that more than 80% the participants have low sleep quality and quality of life sleep quality score of subjects was significant association with physical dimension of quality of life (P<0.05). Also was showed that BMI and HbA1c indexes in persons with poor sleep (global PSQI>5) are more than others.

 

Conclusion: Low quality of life and poor Sleep quality in diabetic patients were increased attention of administrators with re-education programs of nurses and education of patients and it was situated in nursing care priorities.
