Introduction: Living with a chronic disease such as diabetes involves not only physical complications but also numerous psychological challenges that can affect patients’ quality of life. Identifying psychological interventions tailored to the challenges associated with chronic illness may play an important role in helping patients adapt to their condition. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of group logotherapy in reducing anxiety, enhancing meaning in life, and improving psychological well-being among patients with type II diabetes.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest–posttest control-group design. The study population consisted of patients with type II diabetes who attended diabetes treatment centers in Isfahan in 2025. Thirty participants were selected using purposive sampling and randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 15) and a control group (n = 15) using simple randomization (lottery method). The experimental group participated in ten 90-minute sessions of group logotherapy, whereas the control group received no intervention. Data were collected using the Four Systems Anxiety Questionnaire (FSAQ; Köksal and Power, 1990), the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (Steger et al., 2006), and Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scale (1989). Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA).
Results: Group logotherapy significantly reduced anxiety (F = 40.114, P < 0.001, η² = 0.59), increased meaning in life (F = 18.13, P < 0.001, η² = 0.40), and improved psychological well-being (F = 5.18, P < 0.001, η² = 0.16) among patients with type II diabetes.
Conclusion: Group logotherapy may enhance psychological well-being among patients with type II diabetes by helping them redefine their identity beyond the illness and accept unavoidable physical suffering. Therefore, this existential psychological intervention may serve as an effective complementary approach alongside conventional medical treatment within comprehensive care and support programs aimed at promoting well-being and reducing anxiety among patients with type II diabetes.
