Introduction: Contracting chronic diseases such as diabetes involves not only physical complications but also numerous psychological challenges that affect patients' quality of life. Identifying psychological interventions tailored to the suffering of chronic illnesses can play a vital role in these patients' adaptation. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of group logotherapy on reducing anxiety, increasing the meaning of life, and improving the psychological well-being of patients with type 2 diabetes.
Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group. The statistical population consisted of patients with type 2 diabetes referring to diabetes treatment centers in Isfahan in 2025. from whom 30 individuals were selected through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to experimental (n = 15) and control (n = 15) groups via simple randomization (lottery). The experimental group participated in 10 sessions of 90-minute group logotherapy, while the control group received no intervention. Data were collected using the Cattell Anxiety Questionnaire (1990), the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (Steger, 2006), and Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scale (1989). Data analysis was conducted using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA).
Results: Findings indicated that group logotherapy significantly reduced anxiety (F = 40.114, P < 0.001, η²= 0.59) increased meaning in life (F= 18.13, P < 0.001, η²= 0.40) and improved psychological well-being (F= 5.18, P < 0.001, η²= 0.16) among patients with type 2 diabetes.
Conclusion: Based on the results, group logotherapy can enhance patients' mental health indicators by redefining identity beyond the label of illness and fostering acceptance of unavoidable physical suffering. Consequently, this existential psychological intervention can be utilized as an efficient complementary method alongside conventional medical treatments within comprehensive care and support programs to promote well-being and alleviate clinical anxiety in patients with type 2 diabetes.
