Abstract
Background and Objective: Approximately 3% to 10% of fetal anomalies are caused by maternal hyperglycemia. Maternal diabetes significantly increases perinatal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, as well as congenital anomalies, including encephalocele. The aim of this study was to report a case of an infant with occipital encephalocele born to a diabetic mother, which was diagnosed during vaginal delivery.
Case Report: A diabetic, multiparous mother presented to the maternity ward at 40 weeks of gestation with complaints of labor pain and rupture of membranes. She delivered a full-term female neonate via vaginal delivery. The neonate had clinical manifestations of occipital encephalocele and died the day after birth.
Conclusion: Occipital encephalocele is a lethal fetal neurological anomaly. Preconception counseling and strict control of maternal diabetes before and during pregnancy may reduce the risk of this anomaly.
