Introduction: Patients seek to engage with communities of individuals experiencing similar health conditions, both to share clinical information and to provide and receive support. Social media platforms offer one such environment for interaction. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate the relationship between social media use and self-management among patients with type II diabetes.
Materials and Methods: This applied research employed a survey design. The study population consisted of patients referring to the Iran Diabetes Specialty Clinic in Mashhad, from whom 181 questionnaires were collected. The data collection instrument was a researcher-made questionnaire developed based on previous studies. Its validity was confirmed by experts, and its reliability was verified using Cronbach’s alpha.
Results: The findings revealed that there was no significant relationship between the use of social media and self-management among patients with type II diabetes. However, 37.1% of the variance in diabetes self-care was explained by social media use.
Conclusion: The manner in which patients engage with social media is a highly influential factor. Nevertheless, many general social media platforms may lack the specialized and educational content required to support diabetes self-management. To improve self-management, patients need access to specialized information and educational resources, which should be provided by official authorities through social media platforms.
