Abstract: (4 Views)
Background and Aims: Type 1 diabetes requires lifelong self-management, which can lead to diabetes burnout and deteriorating mental health. This study aimed to systematically review diabetes burnout and its psychological consequences in patients with type 1 diabetes.
Materials and Methods: This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines across international (PubMed, Scopus) and domestic (SID) databases. Out of 482 identified articles, 30 eligible studies were included for qualitative synthesis and thematic analysis.
Results: Diabetes burnout was associated with exacerbated depression and anxiety in 70% of studies, and poor treatment adherence and glycemic control in 63.3%. Adolescents were the most vulnerable group (40%). Self-compassion and social support were identified as protective factors (50%), while mindfulness-based interventions and digital health tools (46.7%) effectively promoted mental health.
Discussion and Conclusion: Diabetes burnout is a hidden crisis in type 1 diabetes management, threatening self-care and quality of life. Integrating psychological screening into routine clinical care and utilizing multidisciplinary and digital interventions are essential for preventing and managing this condition.
